Sam's History

Sam was thoughtlessly discarded into a high volume shelter by his family because
they were “moving and couldn’t take him with them” when he was 8 years old.  I
often wonder if these same people would surrender their children to Social Services
if they moved to a residence that did not allow kids!  Unfortunately, although Sam
was and remains an exemplary Rottweiler. . .social with other dogs, affectionate,
and obedient. . .potential adopters soon lost interest in meeting our boy when it
became apparent that this gentleman had costly health issues.

Sam suffered with entropia in his left eye, probably for years. This is an inherited
disorder resulting in inverted eyelashes that constantly abrade the eye.  Soon after
he entered rescue, Sam had surgery to correct this agonizing condition, and this
good-natured dog who had endured such painful neglect remained cheerful and
optimistic.  His ophthalmic surgeon was not so hopeful.

During this past year Sam experienced ups and downs as a direct result of his life
of neglect. Our man received emergency eye surgery to remove a sizeable ulcer that
appeared within a day,  and involved 90% of his cornea.  During that same period,
his ophthamologist diagnosed him with retinal degeneration which in time will
unquestionably rob him of his remaining sight. Sam’s daily medication costs
$100.00 an month, and despite this continuing care, he must learn to live with
failing vision.  Stairs can be challenging, but with lots of light on the subject, and
his devoted Mom’s help, Sam perseveres.

Through it all, Sam endures his vet visits and examinations with the same
acceptance that followed him through his whole life.  Officially designated our
“Forever Foster”, Mr. Sam is now about 9 ½ years old and has been compatibly
living in a loving foster home in northern New Jersey with his Rottie brother and
sister, Cotie and Sadie, for a year in April, 2008.  When his schedule allows, Sam
joins us at our adoption events and never fails to charm his countless admirers.
Sam is an inspiration to us all.

August 2008 Update: Through it all, Sam endures his vet visits and examinations
with the same acceptance that followed him through his whole life.  Officially
designated our “Forever Foster”, Mr. Sam is now about 9 ½ years old and has been
compatibly living in a loving foster home in northern New Jersey with his Rottie
brother and sister, Cotie and Sadie, for a year in April, 2008.  Sadly, on June 22,
2008, Sadie crossed the Bridge and left her brothers heartbroken.

Sam’s vision continues to diminish, and in mid-July, he fell into the in-ground pool
he had always avoided!  His brother Cotie’s incessant barking for help saved Sam’s
life, and he is always accompanied on his outings now.

Sam never deserved the neglectful family with whom he spent his youth, but he
surely deserves all the love, affection and comfort bestowed upon him now.  He
recently developed some problems walking, and has charmed his orthopedists with
his good nature.  When his schedule allows, Sam joins us at our adoption events
and never fails to charm his countless admirers.  Sam is an inspiration to us all.
